AVT 1.3 TANZANIAN BIRD SAFARI – 12 Days

This exciting trip affords you the time to experience, firsthand, Eastern Africa’s extensive array of exoticbird species, as well as the wide variety of wildlife at several of Tanzania’s most famous national parks. Whether you are experiencing flamingos on the soda lake or frolicking baboons at Lake Manyara; viewing the 3-1/2 foot tall Secretary Bird strutting along or thousands of migrating wildebeest on the vast Serengeti plains; watching the Sacred Ibis or being fortunate enough to see the exceedingly rare Black Rhino in Ngorongoro Crater; or enjoying the sight of a giraffe eating leaves from branches high up on a Baobab tree or photographing the iridescent blue of the Woodland Kingfisher in flight in Tarangire, you will be overwhelmed by the riches in store for you.

DAY 2 – Lake Manyara National Park, game drive
After breakfast, head to Lake Manyara to explore the many interesting areas, including the soda lake with its flamingos. It is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including leopards, African buffalo, and elephants. It is famous for its elusive tree-climbing lions and its hot springs. Other wildlife includes Maasai giraffes, zebras, warthogs, hippos, slender mongooses, blue monkeys, honey badgers, porcupines, hyenas, wildebeest, Coke’s hartebeest and impala. The park features the highest density of baboons anywhere in Africa. Bird life is prolific, and as you approach the lake shore, a variety of gulls may be spotted, as well as the Vulturerine Guineafowl, Blue-napped Mouse Bird and the Mountain Wagtail. Overnight at a lodge.

Days 3, 4 & 5- Serengeti National Park – Seronera, game drive
‘Serengeti’ means ‘endless plains’ and today we drive west via its eastern border all the way to the central Serengeti! You will be amazed by the vast expanse of the Serengeti, and we drive past a few kopjes that will bring back memories of The Lion King! After a couple of hours we reach the main road from Ngorongoro to the Serengeti and then it is another hour to the Seronera area. Two of the endemic Tanzanian bird species in the Serengeti that you may spot are the Fischer’s Love Bird and the Grey-breasted Spurfowl. Other species found in the Serengeti include the Usambiro Barbet, Yellow-throated Sand Grouse and the Silver Bird . . . . the list is endless. Meals and overnight at a lodge or private wilderness luxury mobile camp. The large-sized tents contain a barrel shower and attached bathroom, with wooden off-ground beds and solar power lights. Option of accommodation in a lodge or in the camp.

Day 8 – Ngorongoro Crater, game drive
We drive directly to the Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area and descend into the crater floor for a full-day tour, enjoying a picnic lunch by the Ngoitokot water-pool. Ngorongoro is a collapsed volcano which created a gigantic natural amphitheater teeming with all of the East African big game, as well as an incredible number of bird species, such as the Kori bustard, Secretary-bird, Bee-eater, shrike, heron, Capped Wheatear, Stonechat, Robin chat, Yellow-throated Long-claw and Anteater Chat, African Pied Wagtail, Hamerkop, Crowned Crane, Helmeted guinea fowl, Superb starling, black kite, Egyptian goose, Sacred Ibis, and Yellow-billed Stork, to name but a few. That evening, enjoy dinner and overnight at a lodge.

Day 9, 10 & 11 – Tarangire National Park, game drive
Depart Ngorongoro after breakfast and drive to Tarangire where we enjoy lunch in the park and have a game drive. Migratory wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, impala, gazelle, hartebeest and eland often crowd the shrinking lagoons. It’s the greatest concentration of wildlife outside the Serengeti ecosystem, and one of few places in East Africa to see the endangered African Wild Dogs! Our game drive today will take us to the Tarangire River where we hope to find wild dogs and other predators, or see herds of up to 300 elephants scratch the dry river bed for underground streams. On the second early morning, take a pair of binoculars for an easy walk while escorted by Maasai warrior staff from the Lodge. Early morning is the best time to see birds playing and singing with their distinctive voices. You will have an opportunity to spot the endemic bird species including the Ashy Starling, Yellow-collared Love Bird and the Rufous-tailed Weaver. Other specialities include Yellow-breasted Apalis, Slender-Tailed Night Jar, Lilac-breasted Roller, Black-faced Sand Grouse, Coqui Francoline, Magpie Shrike and the Red and Yellow Barbet. There also will be another morning option for a walk if people are interested. Meals and overnight at a luxury tented lodge.
